FIND YOUR SPOT
YOUR COLLEGE SEARCH AND LIST
Students will learn college search strategies, how to assess their academic and testing profile as compared to students recently admitted to the colleges they are interested in, and how to develop a tiered college list that reflects “best fit” colleges. Students will be guided through activities that enable them to reflect on personal criteria that help them identify their needs and wants in a college experience. Students will complete the session with a preliminary college list.
TOPICS COVERED:
• What am I looking for in a college?
• How do I find the right colleges for me?
• Where should I apply?
WHAT'S YOUR STORY?
ESSAYS AND PERSONAL STATEMENTS
Students will learn to put college essays and personal statements in context and what college admissions staff say about how they view the essays. Students will then participate in a number of writing exercises to help identify what they most want admissions offers to know about them, beyond what is found in other parts of their application. Participants will be able to identify what elements make for effective personal narrative, and receive feedback on their essay drafts.
TOPICS COVERED:
• What are college admissions staff looking for in an essay?
• What do I most want admissions staff to know about me?
• Have I written my story with my unique voice?
